Microneedling vs. Morpheus8: Which Treatment Is Right For You?

Discover the benefits of these two popular medspa treatments.

June 16, 2022

We've heard a lot about microneedling lately. And we wondered, how does it stand up to one of the medspa treatments we offer in our app, Morpheus8? Both microneedling and Morpheus8 involve teeny-tiny needles that rejuvenate skin. But how are these treatments different, and which one is right for you? Let's take a look.

What is microneedling? How does microneedling work?

Microneedling creates microscopic punctures in your skin with the use of very short, very fine sterilized needles. These microscopic punctures trigger a healing response in your skin. It temporarily boosts radiance and plumps up your skin, and can soften the look of scars and cellulite. It can be used all over the body but is commonly used on the face. Microneedling can also be used to revive dormant hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth. You can do microneedling at home, but because the needles in at-home devices are much gentler, the results don’t compare to getting it done by a dermatologist or other qualified provider. At-home treatment also runs the risk of improper or too frequent use. In order for microneedling to work, you have to allow your skin to heal in between sessions. And results are temporary. So, does microneedling work? Yes, but only for a little while.

What is Morpheus8? How does Morpheus8 work?

Morpheus8 is an in-office treatment. Like microneedling it can be used all over the body and face. It combines microneedling with radiofrequency heat, which results in increased collagen production and subdermal adipose remodeling. In other words, the microneedling portion stimulates collagen through the same healing response described above. Except the addition of radiofrequency heat triggers collagen and elastin production at deeper levels that plain microneedling can’t reach. An expert provider adjusts the applicator’s settings based on the treatment area and desired outcome. At its most powerful settings, Morpheus8 also sculpts the fat underneath your skin for an even more lifted, rejuvenated appearance. We did an entire explainer about it [here] if you want even more in-depth info. But what you need to know for now is that Morpheus8 offers more dramatic results than microneedling or RF by themselves. It tightens and firms loose skin, reduces the look of scars, improves skin tone, and reduces the look of stretch marks. These results last for 1-3 years.

How different is the experience of getting microneedling vs Morpheus8?

Bad news: both of them tend to be uncomfortable. It involves needles, after all. But the treatment experience is similar. With Morpheus8 you’ll also feel a warm sensation from the handheld applicator. Topical numbing cream is used for both treatments to improve patient comfort, and depending on the area you’re treating, waiting for the numbing cream to kick in can take longer than the treatment itself!

Who is microneedling a good treatment for? What about Morpheus8?

As always, your provider should determine if any treatment is suitable for you beforehand. In particular, people with inflammatory conditions like psoriasis, rosacea, and active acne should check with their dermatologist prior to doing microneedling or Morpheus8. It depends to a degree what concerns you’re targeting–but we’ll be honest. We think Morpheus8 is the way to go, because it allows the benefits of microneedling to penetrate more deeply into the skin. Results are more dramatic and longer lasting than microneedling alone; remember Morpheus8 results last for 1-3 years! If you’re going to go through a treatment that hurts a little, you might as well get the best result possible that lasts the longest, right? But microneedling on its own is good if you want a subtle pick-me-up a few weeks before a big event, like a wedding or graduation.

So the ultimate breakdown: microneedling works, and Morpheus8 does too, but Morpheus8 lasts longer and provides more dramatic results. Looking for a Morpheus8 provider near you?
